JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL. 669 In 1854 Mr. Lowell was appointed to the chair of belles-leth^es in HarvardUniversity, and for a number of years delivered lectures on literature of a veryhigh order. When the Atlantic Monthly was established, in 1857, he becameits editor, and under his care it attained the highest literary rank. He alsoedited for some years the NoiHh American Review. He was appointed byPresident Hayes minister to Spain, and afterward minister to England, where hereceived the highest honors. He was particularly distinguished for his admir-able public addresses, of which he made a number while in England, receivingthe highest praise for his efforts.
