Of the various natural objects adopted by theancients as the leading feature of their «,rchi-tectural decorations in detail, there is no orna-ment more fitted, from the graceful convolu-tions of its outline, the luxuriance of its foliage,and the breadth of its masses of light and sha-dow, to the enrichment of capitals, than thecelebrated acanthus leaf of the Corinthian column. The origin of its adoption by thearchitects of ancient Greece, is, as usual withmost subjects of artistical tradition, accountedfor by an incident handed down to us by thehistorians, and which, if it be not authenticallytrue, yet deserves, at all events, as the Italianssay, that it should be so.
