(1/3) Capt. Nathan Hoeger, commander of the 186th Military Police Company, stands for a portrait outside the Iowa National Guard Joint Force Headquarters in Johnston, Iowa, on April 8, 2022. Hoeger is a commander who is invested in taking a preventative, rather than reactive, approach to sexual assault and harassment. Like many Iowa Soldiers and Airmen, he has a wife, mom and sister. He knows the importance of treating others with respect and refuses to let SHARP training be a “check the box” subject. He believes “Soldiers don’t care what you know, they just want to know that you care.” Du

He believes “Soldiers don’t care what you know, they just want to know that you care.” During Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, Hoeger was recognized by his peers for implementing effective training and raising awareness to fight back against sexual violence in Iowa's ranks. "It’s time to try to change the culture. The first sergeant, platoon leaders and platoon sergeants go around asking Soldiers in the company about SHARP related topics. Who can you go report to? What are the different types of reporting? If they know the right answers, we’ll hook them up with a Yeti or a pocket knife or something from the unit and then tell them it’s their turn to start questioning their peers and subordinates. This can’t be a check the box kind of thing. We have to ask questions, give incentives for knowing the right answer and for thinking outside the box. It’s not just, how do we deal with uncomfortable situations, it’s how do we as leaders deal with adversity? Take care of your teammates, take care of your squad.”
