Dugald Clerk (1854-1932), Scottish engineer. Clerk was the inventor in the late 1870s of the first successful two-stroke internal combustion engine, patenting it in 1881. Clerk's engine was further improved by Joseph Day in 1894. Clerk was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1917. He had been elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1908, and received the Society's Royal Medal in 1924 for his engineering work. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. Most of the Bain images date from the period from the 1890s to the 1930s.
