The display is dominated by the word ‘ricostruzione’ (reconstruction). A treasure chest or safe below has the words ‘fondo lire’ (lire fund) and ‘Ministero del Tesoro’ (Ministry of Treasure) on it – and banknotes are exiting the box. Images of UNRRA’s work in childcare, medical, housing, industry and infrastructure are featured. Dominated by the United States but representing 44 nations UNRRA became part of the United Nations in 1945. In operation for only four years, the agency distributed about $4 billion worth of goods, food, medicine, tools and farm implements at a time of severe global shortages and worldwide transportation difficulties to victims of war in areas under the control of the United Nations. The agency had its headquarters in New York. UNRRA cooperated closely with dozens of volunteer charitable organisations. By 1947, UNRRA was running nearly 800 resettlement camps, housing over 700,000 people. The largest recipients of UNRRA aid were China, Poland, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine and Austria. UNRRA was troubled by inefficiency, poor planning, shortages of supplies. However, it did assist many parts of Europe on the path to recovery. As a largely American relief project, it was later replaced by the Marshall Plan, which began operations in 1948. Many UNRRA functions were transferred to UN agencies, including the International Refugee Organisation and the World Health Organisation.
