Whitneyof the 18th Ward, Salt Lake City, wasborn July 21, 1836, at Sutton Mill, onthe Douglas river, near Wigan, , England, son of John Barton and Elizabeth Bell. He was the first-bornof his fathers family and a twinbrother of James Barton, now a resi-dent of the Twenty-first Ward, SaltLake City. Williams mother becameacquainted with the Latter-day SaintsIn 1840, and he began going to theirmeetings as early as 1841. His firstserious impressions regarding the Lat-ter-day Work were experienced in he was a little over eight yearsold. They were caused by the recitalby a Sister Charlson (who had lived inNauvoo, III.) of her experiences inAmerica, and her description of the. martyrdom of the Prophet JosephSmith. He was baptized by ElderSamuel Sharrett, Dec. 11, 1848, at , in Lancashire; was ordained aDeacon May 25, 1852, and ordained aPriest Sept. 26, 1853, when he also wascalled into active service, and acted asclerk of the branch. Aug. 13, 1856. hewas ordained to the office of an Elderby James Marsden. Soon after thislatter ordination he was called to laboras presiding Elder In the Newtonbranch of the Liverpool conference. Hewas successful in his labors, and bythe blessings of the Lord he enjoyedthe privilege of adding some membersto the Church. He hired a hall in thevillage of Haydock. in which to hold 668 LATTER-DAY SAINT meetings, but after fitting the place upfor worship the Saints were only al-lowed to use it three Sabbath days,when they were informed that the hallcould not be u
