William de Haya, hadfrom his brother Gilberta charter of two caru-cates of land in Erroll,which was confirmed byAlexander iii., 29 April1251.^ These lands wereafterwards called Leys, and are still in possession ofWilliams descendants. Prom him descended Edmund Hayof Leys, who had two sons:— 1. Edmund, who had a precept of clare constat as heir of Edmund Hay of Leys, 18 June 1472. He continuedthe family of Leys, now represented by EdmundPaterson-Balfour-Hay, of Leys, Oarpow, and Rander-stone. 2. Peter, of whom Peter Hay, first of Megginch, who was alive 25 February1491-92, when he and his eldest son are bailies in a preceptof sasine by William, Earl of Erroll, in favour of Peter, son Supra, vol. iii. p. 557. ^ Copy in Register House of original, formerlyin Leys Charter-chest. ^ Leys Charters. 218 HAY, EARL OF KINNOULL and apparent heir of Edmund Hay of Leys. He died before15 November 1496, leaving issue :— 1. Edmunb, of whom below. 2. William, a substitute, along with his elder brother, in a charter of Leys to Peter Hay of Leys, 15 November1496.^ He is said to have been ancestor of the Haysof Lochloy, Nairnshire. Edmund Hay of Megginch succeeded before 1496. Hewas bailie of Erroll. He was named as one of the tutorsto WiUiam, sixth Earl of Brroll, who died a minor. Hewas a substitute in the entail of the lordship of Er
