For half a mile these rapids extend along both sidesof the island, and at its farther end the waters make theirplunge into the gorge that they have themselves created, cut-ting their way backward through the table-land which extendsfrom Lake Erie to a point some seven miles south of LakeOntario. They make this plunge as two distinct streams, wifhthe broad, precipitous face of Goat Island rising between American stream falls in an almost straight line; thebroader, stronger Canadian stream falls in a boldly recessedhorseshoe curve. And there is another difference also. Justat this place the river-bed makes a right angled turn around. The Falls from Canada. the lifted shoulder of Goat Island ; and the Horseshoe, whichis doing the real work of excavation, falls into the end of thegorge and faces northward, while the American Fall, likethe islands bluff, faces westward, dropping its waters over theside of the gorge into the current that flows down from theHorseshoe. The wonderful hemicycle that is thus created measuresalmost a full mile from mainland brink to brink.* But the * Precisely, it is 5,.3T0 feet, the Canadian Fall measuring about .3,060,the face of Goat Island 1,300, and the American Fall 1,060. The narrowerbranch of this fall, between the two islands, is 150 feet in width ; yet atNiagara it seems so unimportant that no one has ever given it a gorge, about one hundred and seventy feet in height abovethe surface of its stream, is less than a quarter of a mile cliffs rise almost sheer from their slanting bases of de
