Great Ramsden Theodolite. This surveying device was built over a period of three years (1782-1785) by the British instrument maker Jesse Ramsden (1735-1800). It was used in the original surveying of the UK that led to the establishment of the Ordnance Survey. This artwork is from a 1799 report by Mudge and Dalby for the UK's Board of Ordnance. This report covered the years 1784-1796 of the survey being carried out in England and Wales. The theodolite was 91 centimetres across at the base, and is here mounted on a support structure.
