Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974), US aviation pioneer. In 1927, Lindbergh became the first person to make a solo, non-stop flight across the Atlantic from New York, USA, to Paris, France. Lindbergh's flight in his monoplane, The Spirit of St. Louis, began at 7:25am on 20 May 1927 and lasted 33 hours and 32 minutes. Lindbergh achieved overnight world-wide fame. This fame led to the kidnap and murder of his 19-month-old son in 1932. This photograph, from the Harris and Ewing Collection, dates from between 1905 and 1945. The collection consists mostly of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
