A tomato farmer reads the fact sheet of a tomato F1 hybrid seeds Though more expensive hybrid seeds have had a tremendous impact on agricultural productivity But there are also disadvantages if the seeds of the F1 hybrids are used for growing the next crops the resulting plants do not perform as well as the F1 material resulting in inferior yields and vigour As a consequence the farmer has to purchase new F1 seeds from the plant breeder each year This is especially a disadvantage for poor farmers in developing countries who might not fully understand the requirements of growing F1 hybrid crops
