Name of the lake derives from the name of a tribe that lived on its shores the Teles tribe A number of legends coexist with the lake In the year of starvation a poor fellow found a large gold nugget He tried to exchange it for food but in vain and finally in despair he threw it down from the high cliff into the lake Since that time the lake has been called Golden Altyn Kol The lake is a glacial by origin It is 77 7 km long The maximum depth is 325 meters the maximum width is 5 km It is the third deepest lake in Russia More then 70 rivers flow into and only one river flows out from the lake the Biya River There was discovered the 800 meter wide submarine ridge between meridional and latitudal parts of the lake the Ridge of Lepnyova that stretches from East to West for 2 km Its height is 211 meters above the bottom level Teletskoye lake is in the list of Universal Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO
