Tablets of the anti-convulsant drug sodium valproate, used to treat epilepsy. Epileptic seizures are caused by uncontrolled and excessive electrical brain activity. This drug increases the amounts of the inhibitory neurotransmitter chemical GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain, decreasing brain activity and thus reducing the risk of seizures. The drug is also used to treat bipolar disorder and to prevent migraine headaches.
