A Police off road vehicle patrols the scottish countryside

17 March 2011. KEEP YOUR DOGS IN CONTROL DURING THE SPRINGTIME LAMBING SEASON. Dog owners are being asked to keep their pets under control as the springtime lambing season fast approaches. Over the last few years there have been several incidents of dogs attacking sheep in the Pentland Hills Regional Park. Now, in a joint scheme between the Park and Lothian and Borders Police – officers and countryside rangers will be out on foot and quad bikes reminding visitors of the importance of keeping their pets under control during the lambing season. Sheep worrying is a serious matter for farmers and dog owners and allowing a dog to chase or attack sheep is an offence. Many people do not realise that farmers are entitled to shoot a dog worrying livestock. To address the issue, Countryside Rangers have produced guidance for dog walkers; Keep your dog under close control at all times, particularly when near sheep or lambs. Avoid taking your dog into enclosed fields where there are lambs, calves or other young animals. Look out for seasonal information in visitor centres and access gates and follow the advice provided. The Pentland Hills is a wonderful place to visit. Please respect those who live and work in the Regional Park by always keep your dog under proper control – especially during lambing time.
