Otto Nordenskjold (1869-1928), Swedish geologist and polar explorer. Nordenskjold studied and worked at Uppsala University, and then from 1905 at the University of Gothenburg. Expeditions that he led or took part in included the Swedish Antarctic Expedition from 1901 to 1904. He also explored areas of Greenland, and Chile and Peru. A number of geographical features have been named after him, including the Nordenskjold Coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. This photograph, which dates from around 1910 to 1915, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
