The Romano-British townhouse in Dorchester dates back to the early 4th century AD. The building was expanded and adorned wih fine mosaics around AD 350. The site was discovered almost by chance during an archaeological dig prior to the building of a new County Hall in 1937. At least eight buildings were discovered of which the townhouse was the most important. Dorchester was originally a Roman town and it’s Roman name was Durnovaria.
