21/06/2022 Gravesend UK Dunkirk Little Ship Riis 1 passing Gravesend. The motor yacht built in 1920 as White Heather. She was one of the flotilla of small boats (known collectively as The Dunkirk Little Ships) requisitioned the Royal Navy to participate in Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk in May 1940. The Royal Navy renamed her HMS Manatee and was involved in covert operations for the rest of WWII. In 1946 she was released from her wartime duties and renamed Riis 1 Scandinavian for “Journey” or “Voyage” the numeral one can be translated as meaning “Maiden Voyage”.
