June Etta Downey (1875-1932), American psychologist. After taking an undergraduate degree in classics and postgraduate and doctoral degrees in philosophy, Downey became interested in experimental psychology. She received her PhD in psychology in 1907 from the University of Chicago. In 1915 she was made head of the Psychology and Philosophy Department at Wyoming University, the first woman to head a department of a state university. Downey is best known for her studies using handwriting to determine personality.
