Locust internal anatomy. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the gut and part of the male reproductive system of the locust. At right is the locust gut in the region of the ileum, which is surrounded by five small tubes, the Malpighian tubules, that filter out nitrogenous waste and pass it to the gut. At left are parts of the male reproductive system, which consist of six hollow tubes (the accessory glands, dark purple) surrounding a central pink tubule (the ejaculatory duct). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
