A helper at the Chiang-Dao Elephant Training Centre removes a barrow load of elephant dung from the camp.
The Chiang Dao Elephant Centre near Chiang Mai was established in 1963. Today it exists as a popular tourist attraction. However there is a serious side to the enterprise as many of the elephants there would previously have worked in the logging industry. As that is now strictly controlled they would not have survived. The tourists help pay for the elephants keep. The dung in this image does not go to waste. Apart from the obvious compost use it is also made into recycled paper and card, some of which is on sale at the centre.
