Holy Island is a mjor pilgrimage site: St Aidan founded a monastery on the island in AD635, St Cuthbert was its most famous prior (685-7). Monks abandoned the island in 875 after a series of Danish raids beginning in 793. Monks from Durham returned to build the Benedictine priory 1093-1104. It was Dissolved by Henry VIII in 1537; stone from the priory was used to build Lindisfarne Castle.
