Haytor Rocks, Dartmoor, Devon: granite domes above the remains of a C19th granite quarry tramway with stone-cut rails & points (switch) system

The two granite domes of Haytor Rocks above the remains of disused C19th granite quarries including a railway system with grooved rails carved from granite slabs. Photo shows a primitive points (switch) system where a metal bar, placed in a drilled hole in the rock, was used to push the cars over from the main line to sidings. The system was created in the 1820s by Quarry Manager George Templar. The quarries supplied stone for building the National Gallery and British Museum.
