He was pro-moted major, staff-quartermaster, August 20, 1861, forfourteen years service as captain, and appointed briga-dier-general of volunteers September 23, 1861, andserved as chief quartermaster of the Army of the Potomacfrom August 20, 1861, to July 10, 1862, participating inthe Virginia Peninsula campaign. He was then orderedon duty at New York City, furnishing supplies and trans-. portation to the armies in the field until March 31, was brevetted major-general of volunteers, March13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious services during theRebellion, and received the following brevets in the reg-ular service: lieutenant-colonel, colonel, and brigadier-general, October 28, 1864, for faithful and meritoriousservices during the Rebellion. He was re-commissionedbrigadier-general of volunteers, March 13, 1865, andbrevetted major-general U. S. Army the same date, forfaithful and distinguished services in the quartermastersdepartment during the war. He was promoted lieutenant-colonel, staff, deputyquartermaster-general, July 29, 1866, and mustered outof the volunteer service September 1, 1866. He servedas depot quartermaster at Baltimore from April 18,1867, to May 13, 1869; was in charge of SchuylkillArsenal, Pennsylvania, and chief quartermaster of theDivision of the Atlantic to June 1, 1872
