Slavery would extend its borders by all means. The free states should be " eribb'd, cabin'd and con- fined " in perpetuity. The press said the country was a desert, in which wild cattle and Indians could barely exist, and there- fore there was no opening in such a territory for farms, towns and cities, such as might flourish in free states elsewhere.
