Anthony Epstein. Portrait of British virologist Sir Anthony Epstein, discoverer of the Epstein- Barr virus. He is a fellow of Wollfson College, Oxford, and Emeritus professor of Pathology at the University of Bristol. Sir Epstein discovered in 1964 a new human herpes virus, named after him and his co-discoverer. The Epstein-Barr virus (human herpes virus 4) causes infectious mononucleosis in young adults. This infection leads to fever and sore throat, with swollen lymph nodes. The virus is also implicated in some forms of cancer, notably Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. For this work, Sir Epstein has received numerous awards. Photograph taken in 1994.
