Until these objections can, in a meas-ure, be removed its use will certainly continue to belimited. Very recently the small static machine shown inFig. 23 has been introduced for charging the largermachines. Its reasonable price and small size would. Fig. 23.—The Wimshurst Static Machine. — 119 — obviate the objections just mentioned, and it may bethe means of establishing the value of the staticinduced current in gynaecology upon a surer cost does not much exceed that of a good portablegalvanic battery. It may be operated by hand power, but a water, gas or electric motor would be moreconvenient. The current is not produced so rapidlyas in the larger machines, but it has proved sufficientfor gynaecological purposes in utilizing Dr. Mortonsinduced current; and the machine possesses theadvantage over the larger machines that it will givea current in all conditions of atmospheric surround-ings. It consists of two glass discs placed neartogether, which are made to revolve in opposite direc-tions by means of belts attached to the spindles out-side the glass case inclosing them. Upon the outermargin of these discs are placed brass carriers, which in revolving are rubbed by metal
