An approjiriate tablet erected where the greatcommander stood, tells of the part the old elm plaved inthe days of freedoms early struggle. The tree is associatedwith the whole of ^Vashingtons encampment in Cambridge,for within its branches he had a platform built, fromwhich lofty look-out he was accustomed to scan the sur-rounding country. It stands on Garden Street, not far from Harvard Col-lege, and almost immediatelv in front of Shepard ISIemorial Church. Though bentand decrepit in form, it bursts forth each year into new life, with a vigor that we maywell imagine springs from its proud consciousness of a nations veneration and THE FRANKLIN MONUMENT. The most remarkable man that Boston ever produced,indeed, in many respects, the most remarkable man bornon American soil, was Benjamin Franklin. Philosopher,statesman, scientist and wit; he was a man to shine inany epoch of the world, and be a potent and beneficialinfluence in any age. He was moreover a typical Yankee,shrewd and thrifty, with a fund of common sense akin toSolomons. Benjamin Franklin was born Jan. 17th, 1706,on the spot now occupied by the Post building on iSIilkStreet. Many memorials of this illustrious citizen are tobe found in Boston, but the most conspicuous is hisstatue in front of City Hall.
