Breast self-examination. Coloured mammogram (breast X-ray, white streaks) over a woman inspecting her breast with her hand during a self-examination. Regular palpation (examination by touch) is recommended to detect the early stages of breast cancer or other growths. First there is a visual examination for changes in breast shape and surface texture. Then the fingers and the flat of a hand are run over each breast to the armpit to check the tissue more closely for lumps. Mammography is another essential tool for the diagnosis of breast abnormalities. Early detection and treatment will give a better chance of a cure.
