They are divided into tribal bandsand elans exceeding 150 in number, all speakingdifferent languages and dialects and scatteredon 147 reservations and in different com-munities in practically every state of theunion. In 1900 there were in the continental UnitedStates 237,196; in 1890, 248,; in 1880,244,00<» and in 1870, 278,000. It appears,therefore, that the number of Indians in thecontinental United States declined from 1870to 1900, but increased considerably during thedecade between 1900 and 1910.
