His manifest earnestness in what hesays,as well as his tact as a pulilic speaker, and hiseloquent and forceful language, make him a mostvaluable campaign orator and a powerful pleaderat the bar. At the Republican State Convention,held in May, 1888, Mr. Fifer was chosen as itscandidate for Governor. He proved a popularnominee, and the name of Private Joe becamefamiliar to eveiyone throughout the State.
