Educated at public school and academy. In 1840 left home for a seafaringlife; arrived at the Hawaiian Islands in 1841, where he resided until 1861, with theexception of a gold-fever experience in San Francisco in parts of 1848 and 1849. In 1889-90 was member of the Houseof Representatives, and in 1891-92 a member of the Senate.
