A supplement to Ures Dictionary of Arts, Manufactures, and Mines, : containing a clear exposition of their principles and practice. . of wheel of whicha notice is here appended, was introduced into the Saxon mines about the year 1849 byHerr Schwamkrug, inspector of machinery at the Royal Mines and Smelting Works at Frey-berg, and since that time several have been introduced for pumping, winding, drivingstampheads, &c. The example selected for illustration was built to take the place of twoovershot water-wheels, employed in pumping water at the mine Churprinz Friedrich Au-gust ; it differs from the usual form of turbine in having the wheel placW vertically, andin having the water supplied through a small number of guide curves near the lowest this latter respect it resembles the tangential turbine of General Poncelet, with this dif-ference, that the water flows from the inner to the outer circumference, instead of thereverse way, as is the case in Poncelets wheel. The construction of the wheel is as follows:a^fig. 672, is the tubular axle of cast iron which carries the seating for the arms s, which is 672. similar to that usually used for large water wheels; to theends of the arms is attached the wheel ?o, which is formedof two brags or shroudings of sheet iron, each 1 inchesdeep, measured radially, and of a total height of 10 feet 2inches; these two rings are maintained at a distance of 0inches apart, by means of 44 sheet-iron buckets of theform shown in the smaller detailed figure, ficj.
