Sandstone is a coarse-grained, sedimentary rock which consists of consolidated sand that has been deposited by either water or wind. Sandstone is composed essentially of quartz and the material that binds the grains of sand together is usually composed of silica, calcium carbonate, or iron oxide. The colour of sandstone rock is by and large due to the cementing material, iron oxides causing red or reddish-brown sandstone, whilst other materials produce white, yellowish, or greyish colour sandstone.
