Idyllic Hammarby Sjöstad is a new part of inner Stockholm, a residential area with modern architechture close to the water

The Hammarby Sjöstad district by the Baltic Sea in Stockholm, Sweden, is one of the cities most modern residential areas. It was built with a distinct environmental-friendly profile, with "green" features such as building-integrated solar panels (for electricity) and sunray-heated water, extensive recycling of disposed household garbage. Sewage is also transformed to biogas which in turn is reused by the local households for cooking. The first buildings in the district were finished in 2001. Hammarby Sjöstad is one of the reasons that Stockholm as the first city ever was appointed European Green Capital 2010 by The European Commission / The European Union.
