Coast Guardsman Clarence W. Dabney (right), ship's cook, of 49 Leach Street, NW, Atlanta, Ga., is presented the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in action aboard a Coast Guard-manned LST in the South Pacific. All hands are mustered as Lieutenant Commander Maybaum, commanding officer of the LST, makes the presentation on behalf of the commandant of the Coast Guard. The ceremony took place recently at the receiving station in San Francisco, Calif. A veteran of seven years Coast Guard service, Dabney received praise for his gallantry at Cape Gloucester. After his LST had unloaded and retracted from the beach, 37 Jap bombers came over and dropped their "eggs." Dabney was on his way to his battle station as gun pointer, when a "near miss" killed two of his shipmates and severely wounded him in the shoulders and legs. He staggered to his station and helped man the gun until the attack was over, despite advice against such action by the medical officer.
