Portrait of Louis XIV. This ruler portrait is often seen as the classic symbol of the absolute state. Rigaud painted it when the 63-year-old king was at the height of his power. The painting was intended for the Spanish court, but the king thought it was so beautiful that he had let it copy and loved the original in Versailles. Due to the carravure of Drevet, the image of Louis XIV could also be admired by his subjects in all his splendor.
