Lupus Marina - a sea wolf - Folio Copper Plate, later hand colour, Published 1657-65 Amsterdam for Historiae Naturalis by John Jonston. Illustrated by Caspar and Matthias Merian. These creatures are here placed in the sea, but it is possible they are actually something more akin to the 'Strand Wolf' or Brown Hyaena found in coastal deserts. The original illustration from Gesner (1560) has the animal walking on sand, but in the manner of illustration chinese whispers this copy by Merian now has it standing in shallow water.
