THE WISE MENS WELL IN old Judea the Drought crept, gaunt andhollow-eyed, between shrunken thistles andyellowed grass. It was summertime. The sun beat down uponthe backs of unshaded hills, and the slightestbreath of wind tore up thick clouds of lime dustfrom the grayish-white ground. The herdsstood huddled together in the valleys, by thedried-up streams. The Drought walked about and viewed thewater supplies. He wandered over to SolomonsPools, and sighed as he saw that they still helda small quantity of water from their mountainsources. Then he journeyed down to the fa-mous Davids Well, near Bethlehem, and foundwater even there. Finally, he tramped withshuffling gait toward the great highway whichleads from Bethlehem to Jerusalem. When he had arrived about half-way, he sawthe Wise Mens Well, where it stands close bythe roadside. He saw at a glance that it wasalmost dry. He seated himself on the curb, which consists of a single stone hollowed out,and looked into the well.
