Nanotechology cancer drug delivery
Sandia researchers introduces a buffer into a protocell solution to dilute it. The protocell consists of silica nanoparticles surroudned by a lipid bilayer (liposome). The silica nanoparticles are about 150 nanometers in diameter and are honeycombed with cavities that can store large amounts and varieties of drugs. The nanoparticles and the surrounding cell-like membranes formed from liposomes together become the combination referred to as a protocell: the membrane seals in the deadly cargo and is modified with molecules (peptides) that bind specifically to receptors overexpressed on the cancer cell's surface.
