This illustration by the Norwegian painter Oscar Wergeland (died 1910) shows Norsemen landing in Iceland. It dates to 1908. The Norse are also known as Vikings. They were Scandinavian in origin, and their explorations and raids along the coasts of Europe and the British Isles gave the period from the 8th to the 10th centuries the name Viking Age. They were, at the time, among the best sailors and shipbuilders in the world.
