In these concerts he gave ajudicious mixture of popular and classic as well asmodern pieces, and in 1862 founded a symphonicsociety in that city, with an orchestra of eightyperformers, modelled after the Gewandhaus con-certs of Leipsic. The fame of this society soonextended throughout Germany, and several of theperformances were directed by Liszt. Wagneralso accepted the invitation to conduct his ownmanuscript compositions in the winter of 1871 Dr. Damrosch came to New York upon. the invitation of the Anon society, and madehis first appearance, on 0 May, 1871, at Steinwayhall, as conductor, composer, and violinist. He founded the Oratorio society in 187-5. The socie-ties that had previously existed had faded, fromvarious causes, and the only organizations of thischaracter were the old Harmonic society and theChurch-Music association. The work was begunwith enthusiasm, and in the year of its organiza-tion the first concert was given, with a programmeconsisting of selections from Bach, Handel, Pales-trina, etc. The growth of the society was suchthat in the following year the first oratorio, 1 bin-ders Samson, was performed with full orchestra,and on Christmas evening of that year the Mes-siah was given with great effect. It performedBachs, Beethovens, Brahms, Handels, Haydns,Mendelssohns, Mozarts, Palestrinas, and othergreat works, many of which had never been givenin the United States.
