Atthe age of 21 he began to act as a book-agent forHartford firms, and subsequently acted as book-keeper and clerk until 1877, when he commencedbusiness on his own account. He has been Clerkof the court of Probate for several years and As-sistant Town Clerk, besides filling a number ofother local offices. In 1873 he was a member ofthe State Central committee. In politics he is aDemocrat. EDGAR BASS Of Coventry, counts as a Democratic gain, being-elected to the place filled by a Republican lastyear. He is a farmer by occupation and receiveda common school education. He was born inScotland in Windham county, Sept. 17, 1834. 175. LOUIS PH1LIPP Of Vernon, is by birth a German, but came tothis country at the age of fourteen and was em-ployed as clerk in a commission house for aboutfour years, until 1858, when he removed to Rock-ville, where he has since lived, being chieflyengaged in mechanical pursuits. He enlisted asa private in Company E, First Connecticut Cav- alry, in 1863, and served until the end of thewar. He is a Republican and a good representa-tive of the large German element in the populationof the town. He was born in 1840, and receiveda thorough education in Germany up to the timeof his removal to this country. He has held anumber of local offices. 176 JOSEPH ABBOTT THOMPSON Of Ellington, was a member of the House in1874, and by occupation is a farmer of the oldfashion, living on the homestead
