Fig. 33 shows a style of bond known as the plastic bond from the fact that the medium of contact is a paste oramalgam and is therefore plas-tic. This bond has the uniquefeature that the fish-plate it-self is used as the bond proper,the plastic part merely insur-ing that there shall be a goodcontact between the fish-plateand the rails. A piece of corkholds the plastic compound in position near the side of therails. The surface of the plate and rail is brightened beforethe plastic device is put in place, and as the contact surfacesare thereafter protected by the plastic compound, which re-mains soft, air and water are kept from the joints and rust-ing cannot take place.
