Its inhabitants were fishermen for many genera-tions, but lat-terly the townhas become amanufacturingcenter and sum-mer resort. A more im-portant out-thrust of thecoast is CapeAnn, which Capt. John Smith called Tragabigzanda in honorof a Turkish lady whose slave he had been in Constanti-nople. Back of Cape Ann is Gloucester, New Englandsgreatest fishing port, and a place of notable picturesquenessand interest. Another charming old coast town is Newbury-port at the mouth of the INIerrimac.
