This area of Brooklyn was primarily a manufacturing district housing warehouses and factories that made machinery, card-board boxes and Brillo soap-pads. With the decline of manufacturing industry, the area was increasingly gentrified as artists moved in in the late 1970s and the area became largely residential. The acronym 'Dumbo' ('Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass') dates to 1978. In 2007 Dumbo was designated New York's 90th historic district. Increasing property prices in Manhattan in the 1990s helped photomusic art studios, galleries, indie film shops, fashion/furniture showrooms and band practice spaces locate there. The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the US. With a total length of 1825 m (5989 ft), it was the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1903. The main span, between the Neo-Gothic limestone granite towers, is m ( ft) long, with a clearance of 41m (135 ft). There are six lanes for cars and a separate upper deck walkway for pedestrians and cyclists. The builders made the bridge 4-6 times stronger than necessary, but, because of its age, there are restrictions on lorries and buses.
