Coburg Peninsula (Arnhem Land) is home to some of the best reef and tropical sports fishing in the world. Situated at the very top left tip of Arnhem Land, the spectacular wilderness of Garig Gunak Barlu National Park encompasses almost all of Cobourg Peninsula. The park preserves the peninsula’s sandy beaches, dunes and associated coastal grasslands, mangroves, rainforest patches, swamps, lagoons, coral reefs, sea grass meadows and rich marine life. Cobourg is also abundant in some amazing marine life such as dugong, dolphins, six species of marine turtles, crocodiles, stingrays and plenty of fish. Cobourg is home to the first RAMSAR wetlands (wetlands of international importance) in Australia with freshwater paper bark swamps and billabongs 100 m from the coastline. Northern beaches are, commonly used as turtle nesting areas and covered in a wide range of shells. Arnhem Land in Northern Australia also covers the area of Kakadu National Park and the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park at the Cobourg Peninsula. Declared an Aboriginal Reserve in 1931, it remains one of the largest Aboriginal Reserves in Australia and is perhaps best known for its remoteness, its art, and the strong continuing traditions of its Indigenous inhabitants. It is notable for its Aboriginal rock-art, some of the finest examples of which can be found at Ubirr Rock, Injalak Hill, and in the Canon Hill area. Northeast Arnhem Land is home to the indigenous Yolngu people, one of the largest Indigenous groups in Australia, and one who have succeeded in maintaining a vigorous traditional indigenous culture. The climate of Arnhem Land is tropical monsoon with a wet and dry season. As Arnhem Land is Aboriginal land most of it is blocked off from independent travelers, however people can visit the north western and north eastern corners of Cobourg Peninsula and Gove, and Oenpelli near Kakadu's East Alligator River with the Injalaj Arts and Crafts Association.
