The visit of Samoset, whosoprevious intercourse with the English fishermen enabledhim to salute them with Welcome, welcome, English-men ! was followed by that of Massasoit, the principalsachem of the country, with whom the celebratedtreaty was concluded, which was inviolably observed,for more than fifty years, and contributed, duringthat period, more than any other circumstance, tosecure New England from the horrors of Indian war-fare.
