Battery Hays was begun onJuly 15, 1863, in preparation for an attack on Battery Wagner set for July 18th. Within sixty hours from breaking ground, theplatforms were made, the earthworks thrown up and revetted with sand-bags—as shown—magazines constructed and fifteen Parrottguns in place, ready to open fire.
