The White Company's Samkin Aylward wagers his feather-bed in a wrestling match with John Hordle at the Pied Merlin.

This illustration is by American artist and illustrator Wyeth and accompanied Scottish writer Arthur Conan Doyle's historical adventure titled "The White Company," whose action was set during the Hundred Years' War. The Pied Merlin is an inn in England. Alleyne Edricson (son of Eric) is the main character, who was raised by monks and later becomes a knight after performing a feat of valor in France where he joined the White Company, a band of English archers. John Hordle, another main character in the novel, was kicked out of the abbey where Alleyne was raised. He is an enormous man, very strong and sarcastic, pictured here at right. The two had met up and traveled together and meet Samkin Aylward, an archer from the White Company. Sam wagers his feather-bed in a wrestling match (pictured here) with Hordle. Sam seems at a disadvantage but defeats Hordle, who then joins the White Company.
