The Carpal Joints.—The carpal bonesare connected by ligamentous bands, whichpass transversely and longitudinally florabone to bone on the back, called dorsalligaments; by palmar ligaments, whichhave 8 «-milar disposition in front; by interosseous cartilages betweenthe boDss; and by a strong ligamentous band connecting the bones ofthe two sides, called anterior annular ligament. Five distinct synovia, membranes enter into the carpal articulations. Between the bones of each range there is a slight movement offlexion and WHIST JOINT The Carpo-Metacarpal Joints.—The second row of carpal bonesarticulates with the metacarpal finger bones by dorsal and palmar liga-ments ; and the metacarpal of the thumb is joined to the trapeziumby a true capsular ligament. The metacarpal bones of the four fin-ger are .nnnected at their bases by dorsal, palmar, and interosseousigaments. The thumb, shoulder, and Lip joints are the only ones intile body having true capsular ligaments The movements of the carpo-inetacarpal articulations are limited toa slight degree of sliding motion, except in the case of the of the thumb with the trapezium, which has flexi m, extension, adduction, abduction, iind circumduction. 88 ANATOMY Metacarpophalangeal Joints.—The metacarpal anil fingefDones are united by anterior fibro-cartilag7,.ous ligaments, strong, nar-row lateral ligaments, and strong ligamentous bands, called transverseligaments.
